What is WiFi?

The WiFi (IEEE 802.11b/g standard Wireless Fidelity) technology allows high speed wireless access to Internet, within an average range of 100 meters, between the device and the access point. It has the capacity of connecting computers without wires (through radio waves), without requiring any cable for the connection to each other. This way, you can surf the Internet from your office, cafe terrace, train station, airport, or from different spots within a house.

Advantages of service

•  Quickness: WiFi to surf, send and receive emails.

•  Easy to use: WiFi is very easy to use, whenever you are within a (Zon@RACSA) coverage area or access point. The equipment user will have to look for the network and choose Zon@RACSA.

•  Quality: You will get the same quality of service within any WiFi area wherever you may be.

•  Convenience: There is no need of getting a telephone connection, and there is no waiting time, you just have to get easily connected through a wireless access that will allow you access to greater information (voice, data and video) volumes.

•  Equipment diversity: The user has a great diversity of equipment available at the market with capacity to access WiFi networks, among which the most common are the laptops, personal assistants (PDA), cell phones.

•  Security: RACSA incorporates security mechanisms through access control and network security component systems. Just like any other connection to the Internet, the user is recommended to have antivirus programs and firewalls to protect his/her information.

Wireless networks are made up of two elements :

A. Device where the user is connected

Access Point = AP: this element is the base station that usually has connectivity with the wire or wireless world. The AP creates around itself a coverage area where the users or devices can be connected.

An Access Point provides a limited range of distances between 20 and 100 m. At the exterior the ranges are greater where distances between 200 m and 500 m can be reached depending upon the type of antennas used. The users of this service can only access within the access point’s coverage range.

B. Elements required for the user to get connected

User’s devices: these elements are PCs, PDAs and any other element having wireless network card complying with the IEEE 802.11 b/g standard. There are different types of these cards such as: PCCard, PCI, Compact Flash, etc. RACSA does not provide the devices indicated above; nevertheless they are already incorporated in most portable equipment, but they can also be found in any computer store.

A WiFi public network to access the Internet is known as PWLAN (Public Wireless LAN). The locations where the service is rendered are known as Public Hot Spots and they usually occupy strategic places such as: airports, hotels, train stations, restaurants, etc. Initially their target market was made up of those persons known as mobile workers, who spend a lot of time outside their office and who use the access to Internet as part of their daily work. Nevertheless, it is currently used by persons with different interests and needs and with means of access such as WiFi offering new locations to access the Internet they do not have to depend upon a physical connection in an office or house.
